Department of Hematology Taking the Lead in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation

The Department of Hematology in Internal Medicine of CHA Bundang Medical Center provides treatments for diseases such as leukemia, malignant lymphoma, multiple myeloma, myelodysplastic syndrome, aplastic anemia, thrombocytopenia and thrombosis, and also for colon cancer in the field of solid cancer. To this end, the department operates the exclusive cancer ward, the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Center and the Outpatient Chemotherapy Room, along with the Hematology Lab to support them.

Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation through Unrelated Cord Blood

The medical team is committed to delivering specialized care with highly complex cytotherapy such as hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, which makes it stand out from other hospitals. Since the Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplant Center opened in September 1996, it has continuously provided special operations for patients, starting from its first autologous stem cell transplantation in February 1997 and allogeneic stem cell transplantation in June the same year. In 2005, it began unrelated cord blood stem cell transplantation for an adult patient with leukemia who did not have any siblings or unrelated donors.

The department is at the forefront in Korea in deploying and researching treatment that uses unrelated cord blood stem cell transplantation for adult patients. Moving ahead, it will be committed to delivering more specialized and advanced treatment services based on research capabilities and clinical know-how acquired for the past 20 years.

In addition, the staff offers the highest-level care in the nation in the field of thrombosis and hemostasis including purpura and thrombosis. As a leading researcher in Korea with a lot of research results, prof. Do-yeon Oh has served as the representative of Korea in the Asian-Pacific Society on Thrombosis and Hemostasis. The department will continue to provide specialized and cutting-edge medical services of a higher level for patients.
